My stomach is in rebellion. The blood has left my face. I stop listening to the voice rolling along in my earbud. Without the translation, the vuvv’s ode, its scratchy iambs and dactyls, sound like someone walking forcefully in corduroys. We are going to starve to death because of this idiot. My family is going to have our house taken away. The vuvv don’t care if you can’t pay. They take everything you have.

I walk out of the office without even saying good-bye. I feel sick. Behind me, I hear Chloe interrupting and saying, “Please, please — this guy Buddy . . .”

I come home and I do my homework. There is nothing else to do. Nothing matters, but I keep on doing the homework. I sketch the vuvv compound. All the tiny houses at its feet are coated in black. I scratch the black darker, and darker, and more violent, until there’s nothing but a haze of scribbles, and their fortress sits in a lake of shadow.
